HELPHanif : A comprehensive rehabilitation program for Hanif coordinated by Universiti Sains Malaysia
Hanif and his family require constant assistance, support and advice to cope with the many challenges that they face daily. The HELPHanif project was created to provide comprehensive support and assistance for Hanif and his family
The Homecare Extended Living Programme is a community project of Universiti Sains Malaysia and is part of its community responsibility to develop domiciliary health care and improve the quality of life of patients who need full time life support management. This project is supported by Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia [HUSM] and the BRAINetwork Centre for Neurocognitive Science with Tan Sri Dato' Dzulkifli Abdul Razak as the patron.
The HELP [Homecare Extended Living Programme] Hanif Fund was setup in August 2008 in order to help Muhamad Hanif bin Harshim make a successful transition from the Intensive Care Unit, HUSM to his home in Bachok, Kelantan.
Muhamad Hanif bin Harshim, fondly known as Hanif, was born on the 4th of January 2002. Shortly after birth, Hanif experienced respiratory problems and was admitted to hospital multiple times. In July 2002, Hanif's condition worsened, affecting his central nervous system which rendered him paralysed from the neck down. Hanif was put on a respiratory ventilator and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of HUSM in Kelantan. Hanif spent the next six years of his life as a patient in the ICU.
Hanif is now 6 years old and is still fully dependant on a ventilator. Despite his condition, he is an intelligent, cheerful and inquisitive young boy. However, the grim surroundings of the Intensive Care Unit is a barrier to his mental, physical and social well-being.
With this in mind, the primary goal of HELP Hanif is to enable Hanif to return home to live with his family. This programme involves a comprehensive rehabitlitation programme based on a close partnership between Hanif's family and a commitee of volunteers from the hospital staff.
A year after the programme was launched, Hanif has finally returned home to live with his family. However, this is just the beginning for Hanif and his family as they learn to adapt and cope with the daily challenges that Hanif faces.
This website was created to spread the word about Hanif and also as a tool to obtain support and aid for Hanif and his family. If you would like to help, please consider a donation to Hanif's family. Even if you are unable to donate money, please take the time to sign Hanif's guestbook to let Hanif and his family know that they have your support.
